Area Governor Q & A
Below are questions collected and not answered during our June Area Governor training. The answers expressed below are mine, and therefore, limited. Posting your answers is something I'll do if you would like to offer an additional or different point of view. Send them to areagovtrainer@d6tm.org

Q. How do you juggle a full time career, a full time TM career, and being a full time wife and mother, all successfully at the same time?
A. WHEW! That's busy! The one most important thing to do…first, take care of yourself. Juggling all those demands is best when you are rested, well, and balanced. Commit to scheduling time for yourself.

Q. Do I need regular meetings with club officers in my area?
A. The face time you get with your area leaders is important. The Area Leadership Handbook recommends one council meeting each in the fall and spring. In this case, more is better and the frequency and duration is your choice.

Q. How do you help a struggling club that may not want to change to get more members?
A. First, involve the Division Governor, their experience and insight may prove invaluable. Second, this is an opportunity for you to inspire a group to consider change by articulating the promise of a better tomorrow after the change, compared to the grave consequences of staying the same. We all want things to stay the same and get better. Often the resistance to change is rooted in fear…fear of being worse off after the change.

Q. What are some ideas to encourage participation in speech contests?
A. Solicit club members early and often. During club visits, identify a few people you feel are most capable, praise them for their talent, and recommend to them to be contestants at the club level.

Q. Does Toastmaster provide avenues to professional speaking?
A. Absolutely! I believe you will agree $54 dollars a year for a Toastmasters membership may be one of the highest leverage investments that can be made. It is an investment in you. District 6 has several outstanding specialty clubs in which to hone your skills and practice your craft. The experience, contacts, and networks lead into a vast landscape wanting for effective communicators.

Q. Who will conduct officer training?
Q. How can a first time Area Governor conduct a good officer training session?
A. First, encourage your club officers to visit the d6tm.org web page http://www.d6tm.org/Clubs/OfficerTraining.html and attend one of the scheduled trainings. Second, work with your Division Governor to schedule a last minute make-up session for those officers who may have had conflicts with the scheduled trainings. Third, if you are conducting the officer training I'll offer this:

  1. Get help - solicit other district leaders to assist by taking responsibility for training a specific office,
  2. Break out - separate into small groups so the focus can be on the specific office,
  3. Allow plenty of time for your trainees to ask questions and have discussions (sometimes the most value is imparted by the comments and ideas of those being trained).
A. What is the biggest reason for why a regular member should care about their Area Governor?
A. Second, by ensuring their club officers are trained, involved, and connected to the district through you. Your effect on their Toastmasters experience will be largely indirect albeit important. First and foremost, because you are a human being.

Q. What is the short list of duties required to successfully serve as an Area Governor?
A. Inspire others to inspire others to become their best selves by:

  1. Focusing clubs on the DCP;
  2. Actively listening during club visits;
  3. Ensuring quality area speech contests (it's an opportunity to lead by example for both communication and leadership skills).
  4. Open the Area Leadership Handbook to page 73.

Q. Is there a possibility for on-line officer training?
A. Yes, later. The long answer is, at present District 6 does not offer web based officer training. And while I think it is a way of conveniently reaching more people, there will be trade offs. For example, the benefit of discussions among officers being trained, the exchange of ideas, and the opportunity to connect with peers.

Q. What is a good way to gain new members?
A. First, word of mouth advertising is the most effective. There's nothing like a club member's testimonial to inspire a prospect to visit and join. Second, locate the "When you are the President" manual and refer to the chapter on Membership Building, pg. 26. Building membership is a long term proposition and I would encourage you to remember we often overestimate what we can do over a short period of time and underestimate what we can do over a long period of time.

Q. What is the one most important thing to do to help a club with unreliable members?
A. Refer to the answer above and start building membership. More members equals less disruption when dynamic schedules prevent attendance, less burn-out, and increases the chances of gaining members who are really committed (i.e. reliable).

Q. If you install officers, do you write a club visit report?
A. That would be an efficient and effective investment of time for yourself and the club. Ensure the club understands the objective of the visit and is prepared to answer the questions on the club visit form.
