Elusive Gilded Gavel

What is the Elusive Gilded Gavel (EGG)
The Elusive Gilded Gavel is a transient ornate trophy. It is a colossal mallet that can be effectively used to preside over a District 6 Toastmaster meeting. It is a prize offered by the momentary host club. It is enticement for a visit.

Where's the EGG?What is the purpose of the EGG?
The purpose of the "Elusive Gilded Gavel" is to encourage clubs to visit one another! Each of our District’s clubs is unique. By visiting another club, we meet new Toastmasters, discover different ways of running meetings, and participate and have fun in a new environment.

Who hatched the EGG
The EGG idea was hatched by the District 6 Trio in 2005-06 as a way to encourage clubs to visit other clubs for ideas, programming & mentorship. The EGG was hand-crafted especially for District 6 by Del Meismer – husband of then LGM Pat Croal.
The Elusive Gilded Gavel began its auspicious journey at the 2005 District 6 Fall Conference. The first club it visited was the Nomads in St. Louis Park MN (club of that year's Toastmaster of the Year - George Kane).

What are the Rules for Capturing the EGG?
1. It takes 2 people from the visiting club to capture the Gavel; if two clubs are present, the club with most members present wins.
2. If two clubs come to capture the gavel, the one with the highest percentage of their membership in attendance captures the gavel (based upon number of members registered at TI).
3. If after rule two there is a tie, then the club coming from the farthest distance wins (determined by club meeting location).
4. Dual members (members of both the capturing club and the host club) count as ½ credit.
5. The intent of the traveling gavel is to encourage members to visit other clubs. To this end, visiting members are expected to attend the full meeting. To be eligible, the capturing members will be on time based on the official meeting information posted at Toastmasters International.
6. Because the EGG is meant to encourage clubs to visit other clubs there are no “Take backs”. This means that a club may not go to the club to take back the gavel from the club that just captured it from them.
7. A Club may only capture the EGG once per 3 month period.
8. The EGG may only be captured by & reside in District 6 clubs.

Rule of 150
A club sending at least one representative from over 150 miles away wins the gavel. If there is a tie in this instance, then the winner is determined by total member-distance of the attendees. Take the distance traveled by each attending member of the over-150 visitors times the number of members in attendance. Add them up to determine the winner.

Example – Nanabijou sends one representative from Thunder Bay to the Nomads in St. Louis Park – (354 miles per Mapquest). Paul Bunyan sends two representatives from Brainerd, MN (133 miles per Mapquest). Unusual CHR-acters sends five members from Eden Prairie.

First, the Rule of 150 applies, so Unusual CHR-Acters is eliminated. Next the two other clubs do some math: 1 x 354 = 354 for Nanbijou
2 x 133 = 266 for Paul Bunyan
Nanabijou would take the gavel.

Where's the EGG?What happens after the gavel is captured?

The capturing club will immediately send an email (with an electronic photo of the capturing event if possible) to the District 6 Lieutenant Governor Marketing (LGM) using the Contact form. The Lt. Gov of Marketing is the Gavel Guardian and will have the website updated. Any and all disputes will be arbitrated by the Gavel Guardian.
