District 6 Newsletter     July 2005

In a recent Star Tribune OPEX article (Sunday July 3, 2005), Garrison Keillor writes of the “transitory nature of life”, and invites us to savor each season, as each is so short. His article is great reminder to all of us to take the time to celebrate life.

July is the beginning of another Toastmasters year. For some, this year will mark the beginning of a new journey of discovery. For others, the year will yield moments of achievement. For many, the coming seasons will cause us to pause and reflect on friendships past. These moments are fleeting as when and ear of sweet corn reaches its peak. These are the moments when life is perfect!

Over the coming twelve months, I hope you find moments to reflect during the seasons of Toastmasters. July for me means the maturing of summer fruit. It seems I always forget that there are so many varieties of green grapes. Some are long and thin, others are spherical. Some are sweet, some are tart. Each has a slightly different flavor, each exquisite in its own way. It seems that each passing year I discover grapes all over again.

Toastmasters is much the same. Each year we discover again why we love this organization. New varieties of speakers mature before our very eyes. Old varieties surprise us with characteristics we never noticed before. Each season is a season of discovery for all who stop to enjoy the moment.

Your District 6 Leadership team has been working hard to till the soil in preparation for the coming year. Pat, Jeannette, and I are excited about the possibilities and are looking forward to a bountiful harvest. Our success will be based on the seeds we sow now.

Our success is founded in our values. Toastmasters International’s core values are integrity, dedication to excellence, service to the member, and respect for the individual. These are values worthy of a great organization, and we believe we should incorporate them as anchor points in every decision we make. Our core values provide us with a means of not only guiding but also evaluating our operations, our planning, and our vision for the future. These values will in the end determine the quality of our harvest.

Our organization also has a vision of success. Toastmasters International empowers people to achieve their full potential and realize their dreams. Through our member clubs, people throughout the world can improve their communication and leadership skills, and find the courage to change. These will be the fruits of our many efforts. We look forward to such a harvest a year from now.

Fellow Toastmasters, your leadership team is looks forward to a bountiful year. It is exciting to know that we will be working with you to achieve our common goals. We hope that you will pause along the way and enjoy the seasons. We look forward to meeting many of you along the way as we all rediscover the many fruits of the seasons.

Happy New Year Toastmasters!  Have you made your New Year’s resolution yet?  Hopefully you’re all busy making plans to work on educational awards, have your officers trained and add new members to your clubs.  What a great year this is going to be!

Just to make things interesting we have a couple of challenges for you…or bonuses.  Here they are:

First, we’re adding up the CTM’s and ATM’s!  Each month when the numbers are posted from TI, everyone who submitted an educational award the preceding month will be entered into a drawing for a FREE Toastmaster calculator.  There are only 12 available so the earlier you get your award submitted the better your chances to be a winner!  Winners will always be posted on www.d6tm.org.

Next…your club could be recognized as one of the finest in District 6 by having 7 out of 7 officers trained each round.  In fact, those clubs will be recognized as “The Magnificent Seven”!  Each club that has 7 officers trained at a district sponsored training event before August 31st will be eligible for the following:

                1. Recognition on the district website

                2. A certificate identifying the club as one of the Magnificent 7

3. Entered into a drawing for a FREE Fall Conference Registration.

4. Recognition at the Fall Conference

The Fall Conference registration is a complete package (except for room) and has a value of approximately $110.00.  Will your club be one of the Magnificent Seven?

Both of these programs are in place to not only reward the successes your club has but to recognize the clubs and members for their efforts and dedication.  Who will be the first to be recognized?

TELI is July 23rd

TELI is coming!!  TELI is coming!  You may have already heard that District 6 is hosting yet another World Champion Speaker!  This year we are continuing the tradition of excellence in education by presenting the 2000 World Champion of Public Speaking, Ed Tate for TELI on July 23rd.

TELI will be launched with officer training in the 8 to 9 o’clock hour followed by Ed Tate from 9 to 10, then 8 wonderful educational presenters all before lunch.  Watch the website for a list of presenters…you won’t be disappointed!

Lunch will host Ed Tate as the keynote speaker and also feature our “of the year” awards presentations.  Who will win the coveted Toastmaster of the Year…Area Governor of the Year…Division Governor of the Year?  You probably already have your favorites selected, come and see who wins!

When you sign up for the full registration of $16.50, which includes lunch, you’ll get to enjoy a special, added bonus.  Ed Tate will conduct a coaching session immediately following the luncheon and awards.  Don’t miss out on this fabulous event!  Send your registration and check for $16.50 to Kim as soon as possible.  Of course you can always just attend the educational sessions up to lunch for a mere $5.00, however, that does not include the coaching session.  Only those who have registered for the luncheon will be admitted to the awards ceremony and coaching session.  Sign up early!

Many of you sign up for TELI when you arrive that morning, which is always fine.  Just keep in mind that the hotel will not be able to provide same day lunch registrations.  We have a final date of July 19th to submit our lunch reservations.  Don’t miss out!

This will be a year of great successes.  One of my favorite quotes is by someone called “unknown”….Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it.  Stay busy and have a wonderful Toastmaster year!

Our total Toastmaster experience is enriched when more people join our clubs. Here’s how you can get started gaining new members for your club today!

  1. Get familiar with the 2005-2006 Membership Building Contests flyer from Toastmasters. The president received a copy or visit toastmasters.org/Ideas & Resources section. This tool is essential for getting started with setting your annual membership goals.
  2. Set goals for membership in your club now. The sooner you begin the more members you will gain.
  3. Put the plan in writing using your club’s DCP – Distinguished Club Plan.
  4. Assess your club’s strengths & weaknesses. Build on the positive and look for ways to improve your club so that all members’ needs are being met.
  5. Begin working your plan immediately! Make finding new members for your club a part of the regular culture of your meetings. Have each member, upon joining and then every 6 months, develop a list of 5 contacts for people they can invite to join.
  6. Celebrate by inducting new members & celebrating membership milestones.

The District Leadership team depends on every member of every club to help spread the word about your club to gain new members & extend our network of Toastmasters. There are many people who would benefit from Toastmasters…most just need to be asked!  Start today!

What is Public Relations?

You may wonder what Public Relations (PR) is and what the Public Relations Officer (PRO) does.

“Public Relations refers to a variety of marketing strategies that strengthen a person’s or organizations credibility, enhance its image, develop goodwill or influence public opinion.” This is taken from the Advanced Communication and Leadership manual Public Relations.

Good public relations answers the basic questions- What, Where, When, Why, and Who? Answering these questions in a persuasive way adds up to goodwill, increased membership and retention of members. This is true whether the PR tactics are at the District or the Club level.

TELI Event- “Under Construction”- July 23 at the Park Plaza Hotel in Bloomington. (See the main page for details)

If you want to learn the techniques of how to be a World Champion of Public Speaking and learn the Speaking Secrets of the Champions to improve your speaking skills and engage your audiences, you will not want to miss this event with Ed Tate, 2000 World Champion of Public Speaking! Re-energize and pump up your speeches!

It is open to all Toastmasters and guests.

The International and District theme this year is “Find Your Voice, Serve Your World.” Join me on the journey to achieve distinguished status for District 6 by getting the word out to help others find their voice!!

Sincerely,

Lonnie Yohannes

District 6 Public Relations Officer 2005/2006
